1) Introduction
I was going to write an ebook about SEO, but I really hate those electronic books for some reason. A blog also seemed like a more interactive option. So, here you are, my free SEO Series that you can read, right here, online!
First, a little bit about this blog: When I first got into SEO a few years ago i got absolutely bombarded by information from various sources. Now thinking about it, 90% of it was absolutely irrelevant. Therefore, the mission of this blog is to provide fat free chunks of information you can easily swallow. Basically all you need to know about SEO in one place. I will try and make this as useful and interesting as possible for both SEO newbies and experts.
So you want to learn SEO? But what is it? Lets make a little search on Google for “video” as a keyword. You should get around 1,210,000,000 results! Now let’s go and do another little search here for the same keyword in order to determine how many people search for this particular term:
You should get results of around 30,000 - 40,000 daily visitors on Overture. Please note that this tool cannot be 100% accurate but it will give you a general impression of the traffic you can expect to get.
So what does all this mean? This means that around 40,000 people search every day for “videos”?. The majority will click on the first search engine result they see or, at the most, on one of the top 10 results on page 1. When you search for something yourself, do you even bother looking past page 1 of SERP? Exactly!
SEO is basically optimizing your website’s position on SERPs. Every search engine has a different algorithm that determines where each website should be in its SERPs. Most of them often take into account both on page and external factors, such as the number and quality of backlinks you have from other websites.
So why is it so important to be first? I’m sure your website is either there to be seen or make money. How are you going to achieve either of these if you don’t have any traffic? Yes, there are other methods of website promotion such as PPC advertising, offline advertising, radio and many other methods I might cover later on. Search engines, however, account for the majority of traffic in many cases and the best thing, its free!
Now, are you ready to start getting into the magical world of SEO? What you should keep in mind is that there is no exact formula to suddenly conquer the search engines. Their algorithms are often partly unknown, their algorithms often change, and SEO requires a lot of time, work and determination (possibly a bit of luck as well). In my earlier “video” keyword example, the websites you see on the first page probably took a considerable amount of time (even, years) to get where they are at the moment as the competition of 1,210,000,000 is very high, as you can imagine.
