6) Definitions

  • Anchor text: Also known as Link Text - the clickable text of a hyperlink
  • Backlink: Backlink is an external link that is directed towards your website. Also known as Inbound link (IBL)
  • Directory: Collection of evaluated links to websites, usually categorized by subject. Many search engines, such as Yahoo and Google, have associated directories. When directories are limited to information on a specific subject or discipline they are often called subject gateways
  • Keyword: A word which forms (part of) a search engine query
  • PPC: Pay per click (advertising)
  • SEO: Search Engine Optimization
  • SERP: Search engine results page
  • Sitemap: A sitemap is a page that lists links to all the different pages in a website, although the general rule of thumb is to keep the number of links on a particular page below 100. If you have more than 100 pages, a link to a secondary sitemap or category specific sitemap is advisable
  • Spiders: Programs (also called “bots”) used by search engines to visit web sites and collect the data for the search engines to index
  • Traffic: The volume of visitors to a website
